Addendum: opinions among the astronauts seem to have varied across the
whole scale. I'm told, by a source with good connections, that at least
one early Apollo astronaut left the program when he did because he thought
he'd played Russian Roulette enough times -- he'd done his duty and it was
time to get out before his number came up. At the other extreme, Pete
Conrad really wanted to command another Apollo and was disappointed that
there weren't enough flights left to give him a chance at one.
