...The latter of which could have easily been shot down had Nixon
and/or Ford had the balls to cut off all aid to the OPEC nations
unless they returned crude prices back to $9/barrel. Several studies
have shown that OPEC would have capitulated within a year of a US
embargo on all aid to those Arab nations participating in the '73 Oil
Retaliation over Israel, and almost all western nations would have
participated. Granted, there would have been the humanitarian cries of
"what about the children???", but on the other hand there's more than
enough proof that $9 a barrel was more than enough to keep the Arab
nations out of poverty. Kuwait was a shining example of how its
leaders - yes, the Oil Sheiks - took a big pile of worthless sand at
the tip of Iraq and turned it into a paradise, all by donating up to
1/5th of their profits back to the country. By 1972, before the
embargo was even a glimmer in their eyes, Kuwait's standard of living
was almost equal to the US.

,,,Had the other OPEC nations followed the same paths of sharing the
wealth, that entire area of the world wouldn't be as fucked up as it
is today. The impoverished would not be in a position where some
septugenerian psychotic maladroit with a messiahnic complex could
offer them a "better" way by overthrowing those holding the purse
strings and reforge the country into a reflection of his own shattered
sanity, another unwashed excuse for human excrement wouldn't have
taken over the country next door and done the same thing to his
people, and three million on each side wouldn't have been thrown
against one another in human waves of useless destruction.

...But most importantly, the 70's would not have been as wrought with
runaway inflation as they were, and odds are even higher that we would
have never had Carter for a worthless excuse for a president, much
less Mondale as a VEEP. The US clearly suffered under their
administration, which got into power only because Ford couldn't do
enough damage control following Nixon's ouster. Had either of them
kicked the *** out of OPEC and put them back in line, Carter would
still be in Georgia picking peanuts, and Mondale would be doing
whatever the idiot does for a living.
