There definitely was a maximum height requirement for Mercury. All of the
Mercury astronauts were very short guys. They had to be to fit into that
capsule. I've been to a few museums where they have a cut-away Mercury
mock-up that you can sit in. Even men of average height don't fit, and
they're not wearing space suits!

Eventually this was relaxed (definitely by the time the shuttle was being
designed), but I'm not sure if it was relaxed much for Gemini or Apollo.
