I'd say that if Kranz was this knowledgeable about the LM DPS plumbing
for Apollo 11, then there is a greater-than-zero probability that he
was not totally oblivious to the overpressure safety designed into the
Service Module O2 system for Apollo 13.
And as stated previously in a recent thread, even if he *was*
oblivious, all it would have taken was a quick systems briefing from
someone who did know. If not an EECOM-type, then certainly a short
phone call from one of the NAR designers from Downey could easily help
to get Kranz's team up to speed.
Adequate level of systems knowledge is a key aspect that should have
been covered in the mishap investigation report. I have yet to see
where this is addressed.
And I find it peculiar to note how lightly the books from Kranz, Kraft,
Lovell, etc are when it comes to this particular area. And if Sy
covered it in his book, I don't remember it. It appears that they
targeted a much broader audience than those who were willing to learn
about those critical facts of what was presented in the official
report.
