What that implies is that the thing causing it is beneath the crust of the Earth, and is floating in the magma of the outer core- which makes one wonder what the hell the thing causing it _is_ exactly? We've got a mobile magnetically active mascon on our hands here.
Do we have the remnants of a huge nickel-iron asteroid impact bobbing around inside the planet? Or is the solid inner core not spherical- but egg shaped, with the point under the SAMA?
