Actually, according to Slayton he got fired -- he got divorced and
remarried, and lost interest in the daily grind of being an astronaut
(this may translate to "he decided to work 60-hour weeks instead of the
usual 80-hour ones"), and was eventually quietly told to pack his bags.

Worse: he was assigned as *backup* for Pete Conrad, which nominally put
him in line to command the fourth Skylab flight, except that there were
only three planned... the third of which was going to be commanded by
Carr, a rookie. Talk about adding insult to injury.
