Oh yeah; it stuck out like a sore thumb; although the thought of a B-29 trying to struggle into the air with a X-15 in the bomb bay was an interesting one....sounds like you would need a lot of JATO bottles. In fact, I had a copy of "The Race", and that may be the book it's in.
Was that also the book that had the Vostok 1 equipped with the self-destruct system that the Soviets could activate if Gagarin tried to defect?
