....Funny you should ask:

http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/01/18/christopher-glenn-anchor-of-in-the-news-retires/

....The thing that made "In The News" a success was two things:

1) Kids were totally bored with the same repetitive "edutoons" that
had preceeded "In The News". Specifically, "Pop-Up", which NBC aired
as a phonetics primer using animated vowels and sounds, and "In The
Know", which was only 26 one-minute shorts culled from some See-BS
news filler footage on things like the world's biggest steam shovel, a
diamond mine in South Africa, etc, etc. Although it was hosted by
Josie and the Pussycats, studies showed that after the first 26 had
aired, kids would turn the channel actually looking for *commercials*
instead of being bored with the Pee-BS crap they left behind the
previous afternoon when school let out. Ergo, there was a void that
not only needed to be filled, the previous attempts actually widened
it.

2) Glenn did what very few of these "mad mothers against fun cartoons"
groups like that [insert c-word here] Peggy Charren and her ACT bimbos
fail to grasp: if you try to educate kids and you talk down to them,
they'll tune you out. You have to talk to them at *their* level, but
make them feel as if their level is at least equal status as your own.
Glenn pulled this off with a panache and style that I've yet to see
anyone else accomplish since. Everyone else always adds that vocal
inflection that says "hey, I'm trying to educate you, and it's a good
thing, so you'd better be as happy I'm educating you as I am happy to
get a paycheck for it!"

....It's a shame he's retiring, but a whole generation owes him thanks
for keeping us interested in the news after Unca Walter, Chet & David,
and even Harry & Howard K. were out of the box.
