You are absolutely correct. They were engineering mockups of the LEMSo, because they were engineering mockups, as opposed to human factors, they
design before te design was "frozen". The front hatch was changed to
square after evaluations of egress. The EMU backpacks fit better
through a square hatch than a round one. I think Pete Conrad was
involved in that...

replicated, at least at some level, the internal structure, so that the
design engineers could make sure that there was room for all the wiring, and
that the tankage fit, and all that sort of stuff. Neat. I wonder what
happened to them?
