Just in case anyone is confused as to why that lists Sputnik (R7) in
the success column, while I claimed the R7 failed on the first flight:
The first 4 R7 launches were as ICBM tests, and so were not counted in
Jonathan McDowells data, even though the vehicle was pretty much the
same. Of those ICBM tests, the first two both failed in the first stage.
Similarly, the Atlas B is listed as succeeding on its first try. That
was actually the 8th launch of the Atlas B, albeit the first orbital
try, and 3 previous flights had failed, including the first one. Those
flights followed 8 flights of the Atlas A, of which 5 had failed,
including the first one.
