A robot cannot grab a rock, and then decide that something underneath that
rock was interesting enough to sample as well. Someday, in the distant
future, perhaps, but not today.
You keep bringing the subject back to autonomous robots, because the
reality, which is that while the rovers have some autonomous features,
what they do is controlled by the humans back at Mission Control,
defeats your purpose. A robot with a grasping arm can easily pick up a
rock, send home a photo of what's under the rock, and if the humans at
Mission Control are interested, examine what's under it more closely.
The "robots" that build cars are more than capable of doing just that.
