There is no 3rd Saturn V. Of the three canceled but completed Saturn Vs, one
was used for Skylab (but its S-IVb wasn't and is on display), one has its
first two stages on display, and its third converted to the backup Skylab
(now on display), and the third has all three stages on display. Note that
the Saturn V on display in Alabama is not flight hardware, nor is the S-Ic
at KSC. Also, most of the IUs and many of the interstages have gone astray.

I don't believe they actually bent any metal, but according to the MSFC
Chronology for 1968, approval was given in Feb 1968 for procurement of
items to build Saturn V's 516 and 517. Then in April 1968 approval for
Saturn V's 516 through 525. These were then cancelled in August 1968.

issued a teletype
authorizing MSFC to proceed with procurement of long-lead items for
S-IC-16 and S-IC-17, the boosters for Saturn V vehicles beyond the
approved 15-vehicle production program.

April 1968 - MSFC forwarded to NASA Headquarters for approval the S-IC,
S-II and
S-IVB stage procurement plans for proposed follow-on vehicles
SA-516 through SA-525.

August 2, 1968 - NASA announced the halt of work on Saturn IB vehicles
numbered
215 and 216. The agency also instructed contractors to disontinue
work on Saturn V "follow-on" vehicles 516 and 517. The curtailment
was an economy move.

August 7, 1968 - Chrysler removed S-IB-12, the final approved Saturn IB
booster,
from the STTE at MSFC and prepared it for shipment to MAF. This
operation completed Chrysler's activities at STTE.

August 1968 - Following receipt of NASA directions to limit Saturn V
production to
Vehicle 515, MSFC completed studies and took action to begin
terminating production of engine hardware for Apollo and
orbital workshop programs. This termination action affected 27 H-1
engines,
eight F-1 engines, and three J-2 engines.

September 6, 1968 - MSFC announced that NASA had terminated production
of H-1
engines under contract with Rocketdyne. Of 60 engines being produced
for the
Saturn IB vehicle, Roketdyne had completed delivery of 32."
