Is there as good a web source about, say, the Soviet programme
as Asif Siddiqi's book ?

Siddiqi, Asif A., Challenge to Apollo: The Soviet Union and the Space
Race, 1945-1974 (NASA SP-2000-4408).

or its reedition:

# Siddiqi, Asif A. The Soviet Space Race with Apollo . Gainesville:
The University Press of Florida, 2003.
http://www.upf.com/Spring2003/Siddiqi1.htm

# Siddiqi, Asif A. Sputnik and the Soviet Space Challenge . Gainesville:

Well, there's Asif Siddiqi's book It's out there somewhere, as I
downloaded it.

It seems to not be available at this time. I checked both his web page:

http://home.earthlink.net/%7ecliched/space/books/books.html

and Nasa's:

http://history.nasa.gov/series95.html

and I only found links to places from which to order it.
