I was wondering - what if the Apollo 1 fire had occurred in orbit -
Wasn't the standard operating procedure for fire in space at the time
was to just close your helmet visor and open a valve to vent the cabin
air to space?
IF all astronauts had donned their suits and were wearing their
helmets 24/7, that would be a valid procedure. But especially on long
time missions the major part of these missions was flown in 'shirt
sleeve mode' and that procedure was out of discussion. In fact, the
Apollo missions had fully suited astronauts only during mission
critical maneuvers, like dockings, launch, reentry, and maybe a few
more...
And I believe to know, that even in Gemini only Grissom's shakedown
flight in Molly Brown and maybe the abbreviated Armstrong mission were
flown fully suited for the whole duration [I define fully suited for
this thread as wearing the whole suit including the helmets and
gloves, even if the visor is sometimes open, and being connected to
the life support systems, but this system not necessarily being fully
active].
