Re: Nova and other heavy lift concepts - PDF files

The first two PDF files are not about heavy lift launchers. The first

Thanks! There are some interesting tidbits here.

For example, I had long wondered why the first Saturn V was flown with
such a light payload. This was important, because the infamous pogo
effect did not arise until the second flight, when a payload closer to
that for an actual Apollo mission was used. The first monograph
suggests that the reason was the desire to provide engine-out
capability, to ensure that all major flight test objectives could be
achieved even if one of the engines in the first two stages failed.

And I was surprised to learn from the monograph on the launch of the
Skylab space station that what actually blew the solar panel off Skylab
was the retrorockets on the S-II stage! Although the panel was
released as a result of the loss of the micrometeoroid shield by
aerodynamic forces about one minute into flight, it remained attached
all the way to orbit.
