A `bit like early hard drives. I've still got a 20 MB drive somewhere,[...] was a little different. Brought the speed up from 4.77MHz to 5,
although if you knew where to cut another trace lead on the Jr Mobo
you could bump that up to 6.2MHz.
Still counts as overclocking. I'm certain that back then it was much more
impressive. I mean, these days, we're still dealing with the same *numbers*,
only the unit is 1000 times larger...
but I outgrew my 20 GB drive a while ago.
I even remember pushing my VIC-20 through all modifications, and
ending up with its weight of just shy of nine kilograms*) and plenty
of RAM, selectable ROM images and the necessary cooling fan to prevent
spontaneous meltdown of the whole bread box (but not really much
remaining air space) in it - it served well up to some years ago as a
reliable photolab processor timer, but that lab has become obsolete,
too, like my whole collection of OM cameras...
*) that's more than most stock PCs today weigh out of the box!
And I remember recovering a defective 20MB MFM hard disk from my
boss's trash and rerouting its RW-head connecting wires, whose 2nd of
four heads was defective, to get a working (three-headed) 15MB HDD,
when I was out of money and out of disk space, but then not out of
time.
Nowadays (partly, but not only 'thanks' to Rusty and the 'necessity'
to remirror the ntrs-server [550GB] <scnr>) I run out of diskspace
again, but having already 1.2TB in my PC and about another TB of
external USB disks (all very well filled) I might soon have a need to
invest in a several TB sized NAS, or a fat server or so...
