Astronautix.com (http://www.astronautix.com/craft/satkshop.htm)
mentions a 1964 proposal by von Braun essentially to create a Skylab
space station but keep the S-II stage of the launch vehicle attached.
This would have provided additional experimental space and probably
some propaganda benefits in terms of the enormity of the complex.

Aside from a mention of this possibility some time ago in this forum by
the inimitable Henry Spencer, I've never encountered this concept
anywhere else.

It seems like it would have been so easy to do. Why was it not done?

Because it would have increased the atmospheric drag considerably, thus
shortening the stations life for no real benefit.
