How long before the head of the Mars Society fires off a
spittle-covered missive decrying those behind these studies as morons
and how the whole idea is a massive conspiracy of fools to avoid going
to Mars??

Good questions to ask the head of the Mars Society would be:

How long has a Space Station operated on its own, with a crew, between
supply ships?
and
How long is the shortest roung trip to Mars?

The difference between those two answers will show why we're not ready
for a Mars trip anytime soon.
