Love the Red Air Force stars on the sides of the tail pods in the first one.
Apparently it's supposed to be a self-defending nuclear warhead carrier that can attack the U.S. on short notice from above, while using its onboard defense systems to defeat incoming ASATs and lasers.
In short, it's the realization of those orbiting warhead carriers shown in the movie "2001" before they show the space station, and the real-world realization of "Peter The Great" out of "Meteor".
