Not necessary. It's only necessary for the shuttle due to the possibility
of ice forming in the divots, then falling on the orbiter TPS during
launch. With Ares, Orion will be above the foam so there is no possibility
of damage from the foam or ice forming therein.
Do hail divots increase foam shedding, and if so, would the areas impacted
by hail produce foam shedding which could damage the shuttle's TPS?
