It's a different language. You have to translate (unless the book was
written as a film script in the first place). And even if the translator
is good, which is not to be taken for granted, some things just don't
translate -- be it an event, a chapter, or even a whole book(*).
(* Which is why there has never been a movie version of "Frankenstein"
that is both faithful and good, and probably never will be. Too much of
its content simply has no translation into reasonable movie scenes. )
Moreover, a two-hour movie made from a normal-sized book almost always
*has* to be a seriously abridged translation.
