Yeah, it's used as a sign of respect, not gender. Mt. Fuji is commonly
called "Fuji-san".
Fuji-san does mean 'great Mt Fuji' but the -san is a different one. The
character means 'mountain', but ordinary mountains are -yama. Only a few
get -san.
