Y'know what _I_ was wondering just now...if one of these big shots can
afford to have _themselves_ shot into orbit, why couldn't they spring
for Stephen Hawking? ...assuming there aren't all sorts of physiological
issues that would prevent his going.
They could. Why would they? I wouldn't.
Well, if the "big shots" won't send Hawking up, it doesn't mean that
the "small shots" can't.
Admittedly, I'm with Rand here: If I had more money than I could
probably ever spend, would I spend $25m on putting Hawking up there?
I guess not. (I'd sooner spend it on putting *me* up there.)
BUT, would I contribute $25 toward a fund to put Hwking up there?
Maybe I would. And if 999,999 other people did, and if the Russians
and ISS crew could manage a passenger with such obviously unusual
needs ("That'll be another $3 million please, Dr. Hawking", "OK, how
about you just take all proceeds from the book I write about the trip,
in unmarked rubles?" "Sold"), and if he was willing to bear whatever
risks couldn't be eliminated (a difference in degree rather than kind
from other passengers so far), he could do it. I'd like to see it.
Carl Sagan is dead. Gerard O'Neill is dead. Stephen Hawking is still
alive. He's oversome very serious obstacles in his life, and given us
a lot. Why not send him up?
