Actually, the shell would impact the moon somewhere in the vicinity of
the tank, depending on the irregularities in the lunar gravity field.
You'd need a rocket motor on the projectile to circularize the orbit so
it doesn't hit the moon. If I remember my orbital mechanics, you need a
burn on the side of the moon opposite the tank (i.e. at the highest point
of the original elliptical orbit).
When your rocket engine breaks, you need an orbital mechanic.
