I looked at the satellite imagry of Diego Garcia on Google Maps, and saw no

I saw very little sign of anything called Diego Garcia; the island
proper shows up as around the size of a unshelled peanut on my monitor
at highest available magnification.
Maybe he means Google Earth. You can zoom in quite close on that
(pretty much as close as most places in the U.S.). The runways with
B-52s and KC-135s parked on the ramp are clearly visible. There are
trucks/carts/people all around a couple of the B-52s.
Go to the Indian Ocean and find "British Indian Ocean Territory" south
of the India/Pakistan border at the end of that long north/south chain
of islands (the Maldives), zoom in and you'll see one of them is
labeled "Diego Garcia" and you can zoom in on it.
