out.
The Sanhedrin finds him guilty of blasphemy and heresy, and takes him over to Pilate to be crucified.
Pilate send him right back to the Sanhedrin, and says whatever else he is guilty of, he's not guilty of treason against Rome, so he's their problem.
But instead of getting stoned to death, they crucify him.
I get the impression that although the Sanhedrin has the right to pass the death sentence on someone, they aren't allowed to carry out the execution themselves, but rather must let the Romans do it for them. They also are not allowed to arrest people without Rome's approval This would make perfect sense for a occupying power who wants to keep matters of arrest and execution under their strict control so they can review the possible social outcome of executing someone and decide if it's in the best interests of the Empire to do so.
Pilate looks like he's trying to keep Rome's hands completely off the matter, so that they won't be blamed for killing someone who has a following in Judea, which could spark civil unrest.
The Sanhedrin is trying to figure out some way to get rid of him without they themselves getting blamed for it, so they are trying to get Pilate to do the dirty work for them, and he's not falling for it.
