Perceived act of war; many think the explosion on the U.S.S. Maine was either accidental or done by Cuban separatists trying to lure us into a war with Spain.
The Spanish would certainly have nothing to gain by starting a war with a vastly superior naval power.
On the other hand, Hearst's yellow press had a great deal to gain by having a nice little war to write about and sell newspapers with, much in the way Murdoch's yellow press did with Iraq.
