Perceived act of war; many think the explosion on the U.S.S. Maine was
either accidental or done by Cuban separatists trying to lure us into a
war with Spain.

I'm inclined to think that way as well, as much because Spain was clearly so
poorly prepared. I'm inclined to think it was a simple boiler explosion, on
the theory that conspiracy shouldn't be applied where either incompetence or
random chance applies.

The Spanish would certainly have nothing to gain by starting a war with a
vastly superior naval power.

Ask the Armada survivors.

On the other hand, Hearst's yellow press had a great deal to gain by
having a nice little war to write about and sell newspapers with, much in
the way Murdoch's yellow press did with Iraq.

Only this time, the yellow press is deliberately suppressing the
considerable good news coming out of Iraq- there's been such a flood of good
news in the last few months it's been impossible for even the New York Times
to ignore.
