I think I hit a major league nerve with him; in that the future of space exploration might be via machines rather than by people, like it's _supposed_ to be from a 1950's-1970's perspective.
You know, where atomic-powered rocketships with fins on them takeoff and land tail-end first.
As was said about the DC-X and it's landing mode: "The way that God and Robert A. Heinlein intended it."
It's pretty funny to see science fiction fans be a reactionary force against the possibility of revolutionary technology transforming the future of humanity in unexpected ways. :-)
