What I'd read was that the whole program - both rovers, launch, and one year's worth of data recovery cost around $435 million, but I checked, and you're right, total program cost was around $820 million: http://science.howstuffworks.com/mars-rover3.htm
Since the new rover is very expensive and has no back-up, I expect it to crash. ;-)
