Average traverse was around 10 km.
I believe that was the maximum walk-back distance.

Here are the actual numbers from

http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/lunar/apollo_lrv.html :

Max distance Longest Total length
from LM traverse of traverses

A15 5 km 12.5 km 27.8 km

A16 4.5 km 11.6 km 26.7 km

A17 7.6 km 20.1 km 35.9 km

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure that Jorge meant a 10km per mission (which obviously was wrong :-) or per actual EVA, which would be about right.

"Average traverse" would imply per EVA. :)

Sorry, I filled in the word "away" into the original poster's question.

"And how far [away] did the guys in the rovers go?"
