Re: Time to start contributing around here again....

...Once upon a time, this group was known for everyone contributing
and doing their best to keep the S/N ratio of the group as high as
possible. Then the trolls took over and too many of us simply threw in
the towel. The S/N ratio of this group in the last year took an even
bigger hit when some lost their usenet access due to several major
ISPs dropping either their own usenet servers, or dropping whatever
free access they'd previously provided through premium servers such as
Easynews and Giganews. And above all that, we lost Henry Spencer when
he chose to bow out and avoid the trolling trash.

...Today, I want to draw the line in the sand and challenge everyone
to start actually *contributing* like we used to not all that long
ago. That means actively going out and seeking *real* space history
topics to discuss, finding websites or news article of note, and
posting links of said. I, for one, have an idea on how I'll contribute
that I'll go into on a follow-up post, but for now I'm calling on
everyone else here to help bring this group back to a normal semblance
of life. This is a chance for us to say, as a group, that we will no
longer tolerate how the trolls, retards and neo-nazis have
deteriorated this group, and that they no longer have a place here
under any circumstances. Our contributions and our killfiles will
speak for us, and from this point on that's all they'll get.

...I'm serious on this, kids. Let's at least make the attempt at one
last stand against the claims that usenet is in its death throes. If
it dies, let's at least go out fighting and on a high note. That same
sort of esprit d'corps that made the Columbia Loss FAQ possible almost
six years ago is still there. We just need to rally it again and focus
it on bringing this group back.

My contribution begins with my next post. What will yours be?

I'll have to find something good, I guess, then.

One question, though, OM: doesn't your requests not to archive your
contributions artificially INCREASE the S/N ratio when they're
deleted? If you start the thread, aren't ALL posts in the thread
deleted when your's are? Sorry, but I don't have any familiarity with
the process and just can go by not being able to find older threads.
