"Most airports" don't have to. Most airports can't handle typical commercial
jets.
What would be nice is to be able to cut out most of the longest leg.
Non-stops from the US to Singapore are pushing 18 hours. Cut that down to 2
hours, and the fact that I have to fly at "normal" speeds for another 45
minutes to Jakarta is not going to upset me much.

The area effectively served by an airport is measured in hundreds of square
miles. The area effectively served by a fast pipe is measured in hundreds of
square feet.
