It seems that fuel costs have a definite impact on the airline industry:

Considering that the airlines are having a tough time with today's fuel
costs, I really do think that ever increasing fuel costs will limit the
economic viability of future supersonic passenger transports. Just how many
passenger transports will be supersonic will depend largely on the
difference in ticket prices which is largely driven by fuel costs.
Because of this, I'm sure that subsonic passenger transports will still be
found flying from the US to Asia decades after supersonic service is
introduced.
