Thanks for pointing out the great pictures, Thomas. I wouldn't get
all excited about it until we see close-ups of the little beasties
winking and mugging for the camera. Those rocks are likely volcanic
and the place looks pretty dead to me.
Mars is laughing at us. Mars routinely likes to poke fun of people
looking at it. Mars has a weird power to rearrange its rocks and
terrain so as to set up big elaborate stages to hoax us casual viewers
into weird conclusions about it. Then it laughs hilariously at its
own practical jokes.
One of my favourite NASA pictures has NASA astronauts on Mars looking
at a Martian trilobite fossil.
See

There is a 12 MB version of the same picture showing the trilobite at
http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/mars/marsbases/hires/s85_31477.jpg
Again, 12 MB, a big download but you can see the details of the
trilobite. What a bunch of kidders. Jeez, they aren't much better
than Hoagland and Chip Shults.
Maybe if you ask them nicely, they will back up the rover and go and
look at the rocks more closely.
All the best to you and yours for the new year.
