Russian/American cooperation is a step in the right direction.
I honestly don't know what the big fuss is all about.
As far as a race to Mars is concerned, my opinion is, that China,
has both the political structure, and the economic muscle to win it.
Russia has other more close to the ground priorities, and America will
most probably get bankrupt or bogged up in Iran.
Should Russia decide to go for Mars, Russians can always learn from
American achievement on the Moon, and invite comrade Spielberg,
to help with ideas and techniques. :))
