Faith in democracy and liberty requires optimism. That's
as true for Iraq or Ukraine or Lebanon or Iran or Egypt or
Saudi Arabia as it is for America or Japan or Italy.
Eternal vigilance is required as well, but at the end of
the day you have to have faith that people have the
capability to live and work peacefully together and that
people have the ability to make good choices about their
future. If you can't accept that as even a possibility,
then you can't believe in democracy and liberty.
