I am not so sure that he even believed it. He is a fake from the getgo,
notably failing to admit that he smoked pot because he wanted to create an
image of himself without flaw to run for President. He also wanted an image
of himself as a 'war hero' so he pretty much faked the pretext and probably
knew exactly what he was doing.
