That admonition should be directed to Michael Mewhinny at NASA Ames.
He's the one who wrote the press release you cited, and which Pat quoted:
"Robert Thomas (R.T.) Jones, inventor of the swept-back wing, basic to
all of today's high-speed aircraft, died today at his Los Altos Hills
home. He was 89."
Even granting that the PAO made an honest mistake in mistaking "oblique"
for "swept-wing", Pat's http://www.luft46.com/bv/bvp202.html shows that
Jones' claim to fame isn't completely valid.
