Your arguments for pre-built versus post-built are well taken.
Moreover, environmental factors favor pre-built--both on the
ground and in space.
However, space economics are enormously distorted by
what I feel has been an unnecessary, unnatural, 45-year
detour. Combine this with the impact of payload mass and
size on launch vehicle economics, and there may be a much
better case for on-orbit assembly than might otherwise be
true. Pre-fabricated modules are likely to be appropriate
as a comprise between "stick-built" and substantial pre-fab
modules.
