Thinking radically, and it might be a useful thought if the shuttle ET
tank is used for a HLV, but:
Why does the ET need to carry foam for a journey that lasts only a few
minutes?
What performance gain would there be if the foam was left off?
Here's the idea:
The insulation is made in four sections, magnetically clamped together
and around the ET, and supported on wheels, or on a pulley ststem. 30
seconds before launch, the magnets are released, and the insulating
sections are driven away - or taken away on a pulley system. The
insulation could even be used for the next flight, if you can get it
away in time.
