That's a long shot. Most likely they'll find Mars is what we've already
found it is: a lifeless rock. What isn't a long shot is that this project's
initial budget of a couple of hundreds of billions will prove too meagre.
Of course, the reason for going to Mars is to go to Mars. Any science that
gets done is an afterthought, a rationalization. With the manned space
program, it's build the instrument first, then try to find a use for it.
If the goal really is planetary science, let's get working on the next
generation of Mars landers.

We can't afford a social security system. We can't afford universal health
insurance. We can't even afford to provide adequate medical care to our
veterans returning from Iraq. But we apparently have plenty of money lying
around to waste on this looney project...
