U.S. citizens, who are free to express themselves
here or anywhere else about this or any other topic,
do have the final say, through their Congressional
representatives, about NASA. It was lack of public
support that nearly shut the agency down in the
waning days of the Apollo program.

The truth is that many Americans wouldn't mind in the
least if the Agency were shut down entirely. Our
fellow citizens who were recently stuck in New Orleans,
for example, would much rather see government resources
allocated to flood control than space exploration.
Those who are constantly stuck in traffic would rather
see new highways than new spaceships, etc.. (Never mind
that NASA's budget wouldn't go very far in addressing
such big concerns.) That this lack of support is
reflected in posts to this group should be no surprise.

I myself, being a former NASA contractor employee, am
inclined to support most space efforts, both public
and private, but I don't agree with your assertion
that one must have worked for the space program to
have earned a right to express an opinion about it
here. Like it or not, this is a free expression
zone for everyone from rocket scientists to homeless
crackpot philosophers.
