Presumably if/when SpaceX became successful Elon would eventually sell
it off to someone with the appropriate competence, (not the usual
suspects) and start on the next project. His talent is in low cost small
team highly focussed R&D - start ups, this is where he can achieve the
most.
This is also the approach that has worked for him historically.
