It would have been a *good* thing for the people of Poland,
Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and various other countries if the United
States had recognized the true nature of the Soviet Union immediately
after World War II, and laid preparations to ensure that it could
respond in force if any dictatorship attempted to obtain nuclear
weapons.
This missed opportunity led millions of people to spend their whole
lives under Russian puppet regimes in Eastern Europe and the Captive
Nations.
And the nuclear stalemate also emboldened many other dictators, from Idi
Amin and Gowon to those who attacked Israel and seized oil concessions
in the Middle East.
At least today we're not apathetic concerning the prospect of Iran
getting a nuclear capability.
