Re: Antarctic and Lunar property rights. . . a modest proposal

On Mon, 06 Feb 2006 02:38:47 GMT, in a place far, far away,
simberg.interglobal@xxxxxxxxx (Rand Simberg) made the phosphor on my
monitor glow in such a way as to indicate that:

What was the date of the celebrated action at Tripoli? I thought it was
a little later than that.

A little. The war against them started fully in the Mediterranean
under the Jefferson administration (though the Continental Congress
initially allocated funds toward the effort as early as 1784, even
prior to the existence of the present US), about the turn of the
nineteenth century, and ended about 1815, I believe.

[after a little more research]

D'oh!!

Actually, the 1784 appropriation was actually for a tribute to them
(the custom at the time), so we were appeasing them, too (which
probably made sense at the time, given the fragility and instability
of the new government). But once we passed the Constitution, we
started to raise money for a Navy, which resulted in the actions
starting in 1801.

Damned rednecks.
