As I recall, the PAL ramp was the only big piece.
Which leaves me wondering- if you can take off the PAL ramp with no ill effects, then what was it put on the tank in the first place for?
I too doubt that Griffin would plan things out this way. But
two things seem clear to me. First, it does seem likely that
Griffin, and a growing number of NASA managers under Griffin,
would be happy to be rid of shuttle now rather than later.
Second, any substantial problems on the next shuttle flight,
especially with the foam, will force an end to the shuttle
program.
Now if we could just get the NASA PAO to be as good at putting a negative spin on a Shuttle flight as they are at putting a positive one...let's see:
"Shuttle Crew Dodges Death Again.
(KSC) In yet another death defying flight to the trouble plagued and pointless International Space Station- now mainly a boondoggle resort for Russian space tourists, NASA's terrifically uneconomical and geriatric Space Shuttle ascended through a hail of falling foam into space today, proving once again that America's astronauts are by far the bravest and most daring people in the world, as they need to be to fly the fiery death trap that is the Shuttle."
Yes, that should do it. Later we can attribute their survival to divine providence, as the recently resigned PAO chief wished us to. :-D
