jacob navia,
What exactly is the rate and subsequent exhaust velocity of
water-->vacuum expansion?
Such as, when going from a soild or liquid form out to a thousand or
fewer atoms/cm3 within a microseconds. It seems that a one meter
nozzle is going to represent quite a bit of thrust velocity, whereas
quite possibly if that phase shift were converted into faster moving
ions as great as 1000 km/s seems doable, especially interesting if that
ion boosted water was in the form of h2o2 plus having a rather nasty
reaction with the likes of c3h4o or of whatever's better.
Call this one a ion boosted steam rocket(IBSR) or ion velocity boosted
rocket(IVBR).
How about utilizing the Ra-->LRn-->Rn-->ion form of thruster; isn't
that one still a whole lot better overall Isp than even the best of
h2o2+whatever?
For the maximum launch phase benefit, you simply exclude the Radium,
and go with the high density Isp volume of LRn-->Rn-->ions.
Of course ideally you'll want your spacecraft to weigh as little as
possible, thus he3 fusion seems by far the best all around solution as
long as it's not packing humans along for the ride, especially since
such a low amount of surrounding mass represents that your DNA is soon
going to become worse off than toast unless you keep the missions well
under the protective cloak of the Van Allen expanse.
