Re: Lunar Space Elevator simply isn't for everyone

What's the deal with the Earth's magnetic field shifting around in such
a dramatic manner? That doesn't happen every five-six hundred years or
Earth life would already have rad-tolerant DNA/RNA/ life mechanisms, or
would have been quie ruined every several hundred years. The system
appears to be remarkably robust and consistent, and dynamic.
The mostly iron core of Earth via friction and geothermal cooling is
quite naturally winding itself down. So, unless it manages to flip
into reversing itself, as apparently having transpired before, chances
are that Earth is simply turning itself into a somewhat bigger Mars
that'll eventually become to too TBI nasty by way of allowing greater
solar and cosmic influx to reach the surface, whereas decade by decade
allowing in a bit too much radiation as to continue enjoying life to
the fullest, especially as our atmosphere becomes gradually thinner,
thus adding further insult to injury. That is unless our "DNA/RNA/
life mechanisms" get with the intelligent design program of their
becoming more rad-hard (there's simply not enough time for conventional
evolution of most species because, we'll all be dead or becoming nearly
so long before it's too late for even intelligent design to save
whatever's remaining of life as we've known it).

BTW; I don't believe we can afford to accommodate many forms of
recycling, whereas it takes spare/surplus energy in order to recycle
squat, and more often it has been taking more of that energy in order
to recycle than to simply discard (aka land-fill, ocean-fill or simply
burning for recovering the stored energy) and simply create new stuff.
We don't have spare energy to spare, at least there's not sufficiently
clean energy in any surplus that I know of.

Using up a millionth of Earth (a footprint that's taking 5.112e8 m2)
could easily provide an average of 2 kw/soul of extra clean and 100%
renewable energy that's in addition to whatever's existing in fossil
fuel based, nuclear, hydroelectics and the lot of green/renewable
alternatives. We're obviously not into doing that and apparently our
fossil or bust mindset insures that we have no intentions of ever going
clean.

The sky _is_ falling. Humanity and life as we know it is
basically _doomed_ unless the species achieves in a very short
window of opportunity getting off the planet.
Fortunately the sky has not been falling on the somewhat newer planet
of Venus, other than within each season of nighttime it might dip by as
much as 10%, as otherwise there's already more green/renewable energy
that's easily available and offering more terajoules than we can
possibly shake a fist full of burning sticks at.

I'm a space enthusiast. To get to space en masse we, Earthlings,
Terrans, Homo sapiens sapiens, need (safe) cheap (reliable) access to
space.
In other words; is it to hell with all that's terrestrial (aka pillage
and screw mother nature for all she's worth) because you're thinking
that we're going to be saved by uncovering the wealth of whatever's out
there?
...

Basically over the next dozens of years or so on Earth there will be
some impetus for the arcology concept. The arcology is basically a
megastructure on Earth, kind of like in comparison to the ancient
pyramids comparing, say, an atlatl to a nuclear bomb, domed cities.
Massive underground galleries are perhaps a bit more feasible and
permanent.

With the rad levels you're talking about it's not just a matter of SPF,
Sun Protection Factor, 30, more along the lines of 95 or so of opaque
outerwear. If the Earth's magnetic field dissipated, tanning on the
beach would be suicide.

In one science fiction story, humans rapidly evolved to being
fur-bearing mammals, furry. In others, there are the apocalyptic
wastelands, much strife, and so forth. Those stories are an expression
of imagination.

Something along the lines of nanotechnology and basically the assembler
lead to the notion of, say, huge diamondoid castles and spires to the
sky, and other various totally material fantasies. If the Earth, say,
had spokes radiating out of its equator reaching to orbit, huge
monoliths of sorts basically growing into the Earth's mantle crust like
huge pylons, huge silico/carbon trees, those would appear to be totally
massive structures. That increased radiation is energy that is
currently guided around the planet. To grow a shell around the Earth a
la a kind of mini-Dyson sphere, helping reduce radiative emissions both
to and from the planet's surface, might involve removing the Moon to a
more distant orbit.

That kind of notion leads to a similar notion of simply covering, say,
the Sahara, Rub Al Khali, Gobi, and Southwest United States deserts
with solar panels. Perhaps the top sands could be fused to a silica
substrate.

We're all gonna die. Luckily, it is not beyond rational modern fantasy
that that will take some centuries.

Anyways that's quite hyperbolous.

Ain't no sound in space.
