That's a ludicrous and idiotic remark: no country would send astronauts on a
one-way mission...

Actually, it's been seriously proposed as the preferred way of exploring
Mars. Water and air recycling are not prohibitively hard, especially when
local resources can make up recycling losses, and a lifetime supply of food
actually weighs less than a fueled return vehicle.

Everybody dies eventually. There are plenty of qualified people who would
volunteer to spend the rest of their lives on Mars.
